Residents are expected to participate in clinical and/or basic science research projects throughout the five-year program. Residents are also required to present their research during the Department sponsored Kimbrough-Moore Day. Kimbrough-Moore day occurs annually in June, and in addition to resident presentations, a nationally recognized guest speaker is invited to lecture and lead discussions with faculty and local community orthopaedic surgeons. Successful completion of two publishable projects, one minor and one major, is a requirement for graduation from the program. Dedicated time is available to devote to research. Residents are encouraged to present their research at regional or national conferences and are supported financially by Palmetto Health Richland and the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery. In recent years, our residents have received awards at state and regional levels for their presentations.

The core research curriculum is housed within the College of Engineering on the main campus of the University of South Carolina. Resources for mechanical and bioengineering projects are available for support. Nationally and internationally recognized basic scientists are available in the School of Medicine to assist residents in these research efforts. Selected resources at Clemson University, the Medical University of South Carolina, and the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Greenville, SC, also are available to support residents' research efforts. A comprehensive hand, tumor, joint arthroplasty, sports medicine, foot and ankle, and trauma educational program is housed on the Palmetto Health Richland campus.
