The SeniorSMARTTM Initiative. The South Carolina  Center of Economic Excellence (CoEE), is helping turn those "what if"  scenarios into reality. SeniorSMARTTM is the nation's only  comprehensive research hub focusing on ways to maintain and improve  seniors' intellectual activity, in-house safety and functionality,  and mobility inside and outside the home.

The fellowship program in geriatrics at Palmetto Health Richland is affiliated with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Division of Geriatrics, and with teaching centers at:

This opportunity offers a broad range of training and practice for physicians who have completed a residency in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine who wish to specialize in the care and treatment of older patients.

Training in geriatrics brings together an understanding of:

  •  The physiology of aging
  •  The changing patterns of presentation and progression of disease related to aging
  •  The unique geriatric syndromes
  •  Comprehensive interdisciplinary care
  •  Integrating function and disease based management

In addition, it provides a focus on functional status and its integration into the care process and holistic approach to primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention. Fellows receive training from board-certified and fellowship-trained geriatricians in a variety of settings including short and long-term institutional care, ambulatory care, community based care, and well-elderly programs. Our faculty specifically includes:

  •  18 Board Certified Geriatricians
  •  2 PhDs
  •  3 Board Certified Gerophysiatrists
  • 1 Doctorate of Physical Therapy Faculty
  • 1 Family Nurse Practitioner
