Residents are provided compensation and benefits as approved by the GMEC and Palmetto Health.
Compensation
As of July 1, 2009, residents are provided the following compensation for their respective levels of training. Compensation is based on level of curriculum, not on individual years in residency training.

Vacation Leave and Holidays*
Total maximum per year of 20 days for PGY 1 & 2 (23 days for PGY 3 & above).
Sick Leave*
Twelve (12) working days per year.
Other Leaves*
Residents are eligible for maternity, paternity, educational, military, physical disability, family medical, and other leaves available to employees.
Meal Allowance*
Meal allowance while on-duty. Meals provided while on-call inhouse.
Parking*
Free parking is provided in assigned areas
License Fees
Limited ($160) or permanent ($600) license application fee paid (resident pays FCVS credentialing fee); state ($125) and federal ($551) DEA narcotics registration fees paid.
USMLE/COMLEX fee*
Step 3 fee ($690) paid for PGY I residents one time.
Travel Allowance
Travel allowance for presenting at professional meetings.
Educational Materials
Allowance for journals, books, and/or software.
Information Access
Electronic access provided to patient electronic medical records and to holdings of academic libraries, journal subscriptions and other sources (such as, MD Consult, Up To Date, Procedures Consult)
Lab Coats and Laundering
Four (4) lab coats and inhouse laundering.
Health Insurance
Provided at no premium cost to resident. Resident may choose family coverage by paying premium difference. Plans include prescription drug benefit.
Dental Insurance
Low option coverage provided at no premium cost to resident. Family coverage available by paying premium difference. Resident may choose high option by paying premium difference.
Life Insurance
Provided at no premium cost to resident for 1 times base salary. Additional coverage available.
Vision Care
Vision Care available at employee rate.
Medical Liability Insurance
Provided at no premium cost to resident (for education-related patient care activities).
Vaccines/Tests
Hepatitis B vaccine, Rubella/Rubeola, Tetanus Diphtheria Toxoid, Tuberculin Skin Test, Influenza Vaccine, Needle Stick Exposure Protocol, HIV Confidential Testing provided at no cost to resident.
Certification Courses
Residency program required courses. (such as, ACLS, ATLS, BCLS, & PALS) provided at no cost to resident.
Fitness/Wellness
USC Health and Fitness facilities (Strom Thurmond Wellness Center provides a discount). Solomon Blatt Physical Education Center offers free access to residents and a nominal fee for guests.
Palmetto Health E-Care provides employee counseling, assessment, referral and educational services for employees and/or their family members to help them handle personal or work-related problems when life gets a bit overwhelming. The first five appointments each calendar year, are provided at no cost for employees and members of their families.

Functions organized by the Resident's Auxiliary.
Retirement Plan
403(b)/401(k) plans available to residents. Matching contributions by Palmetto Health after PGY 1.
Child Day Care
Available at Palmetto Health Day Care Center at employee discounted rate.
Credit Union
Payroll deduction savings plans, loans, health savings accounts, and other services available.
Discounts and Other Benefits
Discounts on retail sales, theatres, zoos, theme parks, fitness centers, many other services available to residents through Palmetto Health Employee Discount Advantage Plan.
Disability Insurance
Short term coverage begins after a three (3) day elimination period. Benefit amount is 50% of basic income and the maximum benefit period is 13 weeks. Long term coverage begins after 91 days of service; provides portable, broad-based, "own occupation", individual policy in last quarter of last year of residency.
Worker's Compensation
Resident covered against job-related accidents and illness.
