Curriculum
Clinical
- Develop expertise in those inpatient and outpatient applications of ultrasound relevant to the fellow's primary care specialty:
- Vascular ultrasound
- Abdominal ultrasound
- Obstetrics and gynecology ultrasound
- Lung ultrasound
- Musculoskeletal ultrasound
- Emergency Medicine ultrasound
- Echocardiography
- Ultrasound-guided procedures
Education
- Develop presentation skills in classroom, small group, and bedside settings
- Learn process for development of web-based learning modules with Fellowship Faculty and Production Manager in USC SOM Office of Media Resources
- Learn preceptor skills in USC School of Medicine Integrated Ultrasound Curriculum (i-USC®) for medical students
- Develop curricula and presentation skills for resident ultrasound training in the respective primary care specialty
Scholarly Activities
- Develop and implement outcome measures for educational programs
- Develop and implement a research project for applications of laptop and/or hand-held ultrasound units in the fellow's specialty
- Develop skills for evaluation and presentation of research results.
- Develop knowledge of processes for IRB review, grant proposal submission, and journal-specific publication
Responsibilities: Ultrasound Examinations
- Perform a minimum of 100 reviewed studies in each of at least three specialty-specific procedures ( minimum total of 300)
- Use USC SOM Ultrasound Institute portal system to send studies for review
Responsibilities: American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS)
- Establish knowledge and skills in physics and instrumentation
- Perform procedures recommended by the ARDMS certification
- Abdomen
- One other area of choice
Responsibilities: Education
- Plan and conduct one presentation for the M1 or M2 ultrasound curriculum
- Aid faculty in conduct of OSCEs for medical student ultrasound curriculum
- Develop one ultrasound learning module that is accessible through the USC School of Medicine Ultrasound Institute web site
- Plan and implement at least one M1 or M2 scan lab for the integrated Ultrasound Curriculum
- Develop, document, and implement at least one training module with didactic and scan lab components for the residents in the fellow's primary care specialty
Responsibilities: Research
- Participate in process for completion and submittal of one grant proposal
- Participate in process for completion and submittal of one Human Subjects Application to the IRB prior to conduct of research
- Publish at a minimum one peer-reviewed article as the lead author
Responsibilities: Resources
- Faculty and staff expertise at the USC SOM Ultrasound Institute and the respective primary care departments to assist fellow's completion of clinical, education, and research responsibilities
- Ultrasound Institute equipped with teaching classroom, four scanning labs, ultrasound laptop and hand held units for clinical, education, and research use
- Funding for CME activities and attendance at ultrasound-related meetings
