Shawn Chillag, M.D., Chairman, Department of Internal Medicine

Welcome to our internal medicine training program. The faculty and I are very excited to offer a great residency. You will have challenging experiences, stimulating patient encounters, emotional highs, and tough cases. The faculty love to teach and love to work with students and residents, as well as take care of patients. We believe that you will see and feel this nurturing and vibrant difference when you visit with us.

We take great pride that our program offers the intellectual challenges of a university training program with the warmth, comfort and diversity of a large community hospital and a veteran administration hospital. Your one on one and small group time with university and community faculty may be unequaled. You will spend approximately one third of your hospital rotations at the Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center, the busiest veteran center in the region. The dedication of our university, veterans, and community faculty will invigorate your training. You will have the opportunity to sample a tremendous buffet of almost everything internal medicine has to offer. Many of the students of the University of South Carolina's School of Medicine choose to pursue internal medicine and many stay with us. Those who know our department the best, remain with us.

At USC/Palmetto Health, you will be extraordinarily well prepared for fellowship training, the practice of general internal medicine, a hospitalist career or joining an academic program. Curiosity about our great university and city may bring you for a visit, but the faculty, residents, students and, I believe, your desire to train in a stimulating and enjoyable environment will make you wish to stay.

Stephen Greenberg, MD, FACP, Department of Internal Medicine Residency Program Director

Thank you for visiting our Intenal Medicine Residency website. We at the University of South Carolina/Palmetto Health are very proud of the quality our of our training program. As Program Director, I am intensely committed to maintaining and improving the quality of the Internal Medicine training you receive with us, to fostering a collegial and nurturing atmosphere that will make you glad you chose to train here and to assisting you in achieving your desired career goals.

Our training program stresses progressive responsibility and resident decision making. This is done by allowing resident autonomy with supervision by a dedicated teaching faculty that is appropriate to the level of training. We also stress learning by teaching, and we have USC medical students functioning alongside of our residents. Our program functions out of two excellent hospitals with abundant pathology, both common and rare. Our outpatient continuity clinic has the atmosphere of a private practice with a fully dedicated teaching faculty to guide you. Our residents and facutly have access to the most modern technical advances, but we still stress the gratifying skills of medical problem solving.

Whether your goal is subspecialty fellowships or General Internal Medicine practice, our residents have all been successful in finding the additional training or practice opportunities they desire.

I hope we have the chance to meet so you can see our training program and our city, and understand why we are so proud.
