children and adult playing gameWelcome to the Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program of Palmetto Health/University of South Carolina. The discipline of child psychiatry is experiencing a time of unparalleled growth in the ability to improve children's lives, as diagnostic and therapeutic interventions expand. To be a superb child psychiatrist requires a passion for learning, the perseverance to master a variety of therapy skills for working with children and their families, and a genuine enjoyment of interacting with youth. To help children achieve mental health, the focus must be on helping individual children in the context of family and community, promoting resiliency and helping the child to acquire the skills needed to deal with emotional difficulties. Our training program is dedicated to helping you develop these skills and becoming an outstanding child psychiatrist.

We believe that the learning environment is of the utmost importance in helping you acquire the necessary knowledge and skills. Our program has established a reputation for combining high standards and close supervision by committed faculty in an atmosphere that is warm and supportive. We are also committed to helping each resident as they explore their own areas of special interest, and supporting their unique interests in teaching, research, and/or advocacy.

In addition to a strong didactic curriculum, our training program enjoys access to a rich variety of clinical training sites that prepare residents for careers in academics, private practice or public psychiatry. We believe you will find our program exciting and challenging — an excellent opportunity to prepare for your future.

What Makes Our Program Special?

Of our program's many strengths, the following are especially noteworthy:

  • The quality of the residents  in our program is outstanding:
    • Our residents present workshops and original research at national meetings.
    • Recent residents have won a number of national awards/honors, including PRITE Fellow, the Laughlin Fellowship and the Rappeport Fellowship.
    • Many of our residents are involved in the community, and actively advocate for children in need.  One resident used elective time to work with Bantu children who were resettled to our community.  Others are involved with youth athletics or work with youth in religious organizations.
    • Our residents are actively involved in education, teaching other residents as well as medical students.
    • The priority in our training program is the quality of the educational experience for each resident.
      • To that end, each rotation provides opportunities for supervision that exceed requirements.
      • Elective experiences during the second year permit residents to pursue individual areas of interest locally, at other programs in the US , or internationally.
      • We have great leadership, faculty involvement, and administrative support:
        • Our Chair, Dr. Richard Harding, Past President of the American Psychiatric Association,   and Vice-Chair, Dr. Ronald Prier, are passionate about serving the mentally ill and inspire us with their commitment to advocacy and training.
        • Our child faculty are enthusiastic educators who interact closely with the residents.
        • Dr. John Bragg, the Assistant Training Director, and Angie Powell, our Training Coordinator, are devoted to the program and our residents.
        • The presence of the Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship gives our program an advantage with access to qualified faculty and resources for forensic training issues.
          • All of our residents complete a week-long training in "Finding Words", a program in which they become certified and obtain skills for interviewing abused children.
        • Our program has a long tradition of providing specialized training in the psychiatric evaluation and treatment of infants and developmentally disordered children.
          • Dr. Harry Wright is nationally recognized for his expertise and research in "Zero to Three" and in autistic spectrum disorders.
        • Our residents graduate with skills for a range of biological and therapeutic interventions.
          • Therapy training includes individual therapy such as CBT and play therapy, as well as group and family therapy.
          • The focus is on treating the whole person, with a formulation that includes a "biological-psychological-social-spiritual-cultural" model.
          • Our program received the G-Wish Award in Spirituality and Medicine in 2005 for the newly devised curriculum to address the spiritual/psychiatric interface.
