The Family Medicine residency at Palmetto Health Richland offers a 12-month fellowship in sports medicine to physicians who have satisfactorily completed an ACGME-accredited residency in primary care (family medicine, emergency medicine, internal medicine or pediatrics). Upon completion of the fellowship program, graduates are eligible to take the examination for Certificate of Added Qualifications in Sports Medicine of the American Board of Family Practice.

The scope of training will include injury prevention, pre-participation evaluation, management of acute and chronic illness or injury and rehabilitation. Strong emphasis is placed on physiology, biomechanics, medical/legal aspects of exercise and sports.

Fellows will function as team physicians at the high school, collegiate and professional levels. This program is affiliated with the University of South Carolina (USC), which hosts a Division 1-A intercollegiate athletic program. Ten women's and nine men's intercollegiate varsity athletic sports from USC compete in the Southeastern Conference. The availability of this fellowship in family medicine residency provides a unique sports medicine medical experience for residents and medical students. Fellows are involved in the teaching of sports medicine through seminars, conferences, attending responsibilities and research/scholarly activities.
