Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

A shared mission to improve children's lives.

The Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Residency Program at Palmetto Health and the Department of Neuropsychiatry and Behavioral Science at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine is the outgrowth of a unique partnership between academic and public psychiatry.

Our partnership supports child and adolescent and general psychiatry residencies, forensic and geriatric psychiatry fellowships, and training programs for other mental health professions. We are fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and emphasize a multi-disciplinary approach to mental health service, community liaison service and public service, while promoting academic excellence and research.

Our program is a two-year course of study offering four positions each year. Residents rotate on a children’s inpatient unit at a state hospital and an adolescent inpatient unit in a private hospital setting. Residents follow outpatients in multiple clinical settings and learn to provide balanced care for patients, including both psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy.

What makes our program special?

The quality of the residents in our program is outstanding.

  • Our residents have been recognized with national awards and honors, including PRITE Fellow, the Laughlin Fellowship and the Rappeport Fellowship.
  • Our residents present workshops and original research at national meetings.
  • One-fourth of our graduates pursue academic careers

The priority in our training program is the quality of the educational experience for each resident.

  • Each rotation provides opportunities for supervision that exceed requirements.
