HomeResidency Internal Medicine Message From the Chair

Message From the Department Chair

Welcome to the Prisma Health–Midlands and University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Internal Medicine program.

Helmut Albrecht, MDI am humbled and honored to serve as the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine. We are proud of our training programs and our residents, fellows and students. You consistently challenge us and allow us to provide better care for the patients we serve every day. Together with our partners at Prisma Health Richland Hospital, the VA, and affiliated clinics, we provide a wide range of medical training programs. Please review our current training opportunities, which include integrated ultrasound curriculum for residents and medical students.

Our faculty members are dedicated to preparing future generations of physicians. Known for innovative approaches to teaching, many have been honored with awards for their excellence in medical student and resident education. The three-year internal medicine residency program provides rotations through a diverse array of subspecialties. Strong partnerships with Prisma Health Richland hospital, the Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group and William Jennings Bryan Dorn Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center provide an exciting training environment. Fellowships are available in cardiology, endocrinology, geriatrics, pulmonary diseases, infectious diseases and primary care ultrasound (the nation’s first).

Through the Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group, we provide general internal medicine and subspecialty services in rheumatology, pulmonary diseases and critical care, cardiology, geriatrics, allergy and immunology, sleep medicine, endocrinology, diabetes and metabolism, geriatrics, and infectious diseases. The entire faculty, along with residents and medical students, is involved through Palmetto Health Richland hospital in providing a tremendous amount of medical care to the underserved members of our community and state. The Dorn Veterans Administration Medical Center is a vital part of our program for education, patient care and research. At the Dorn VA, there has been tremendous expansion in cardiology, pulmonary/critical care, primary care, and research.

Our residents and students play a large role in shaping the educational atmosphere and programs. We listen to our constituency. Our residents are highly recruited locally and nationally for practice, hospital medicine, and academic medicine because they are well prepared for independent practice.
