HomeResidency Neurology Message from the Chief Resident

Message from the Chief Resident

As a current chief resident for the 2019- 2020 academic year, I would like to extend a warm welcome to the Neurology program at Prisma health/USC School of medicine. Thank you for considering our program and I would like to share highlights of our program.

Having witnessed the tremendous growth of the program over past few years, I feel confident in saying that our program will meet your expectations with Neurology training as compared with the top training programs in the country. Prisma health system is the largest health system in midlands providing care for over a million patients every year.  Neurology training is primarily at Prisma health Richland which is an 865 bed hospital and serves as the tertiary referral center for the network of hospitals around.  Our clinical training provides exposure to a wide variety of neurological cases including the management of complex stroke, seizures, wide variety of autoimmune neurological conditions, neuromuscular disorders etc… ensuring adequate clinical exposure.

The top priority of our residency program is to provide a strong clinical foundation in Neurology. We have a variety of subspecialty trained faculty who bring different perspective to the daily clinical rounds and are dedicated for teaching. Our residents are involved in clinical and qualitative research projects, with robust funding support for scholarly activities from GME and a neurology office staff willing to assist in clinical projects. We have solid representation at various national and regional conferences.  Faculty are excited to have residents join them on research projects. Scholarly activity of the residents in our program is in par with many top notch programs in the country.

With the growing neurological needs of the community our program has witnessed significant growth since inception. We started with 3 residents a year and within a short span we have grown into a bigger program and for the next academic year we look forward to having 6 residents. Our recent graduates have opted for a variety of career choices and postgraduate training. Some have continued in academia and are pursuing specialty fellowships at prestigious programs. Few have joined private practices, both locally and in other areas of the country.
We are a group of residents and faculty who come from different backgrounds, who brings different life experiences and perspectives to work. There is a strong camaraderie and a kinship among our residents, and we pride ourselves on cultivating a positive environment for upcoming residents in our program. Not to mention, South Carolina is beautiful! Columbia in particular has an abundance of nature and art, as well as easy access to both the beach and mountains. Add in resident perks, a competitive salary, and affordable cost of living, and Columbia is a really great place to work and play together. Additionally our residency focuses on the resident wellness where you can join us on the Wednesday yoga sessions and once in a quarter outdoor wellness activities.

We feel confident as budding neurologists that our program has trained us well to provide the holistic care to our patients and excel in our respective fields of neurology. I appreciate your interest in our residency program and I hope you consider our program in your application process. Please do not hesitate to contact with any questions.
