HomeResidency OB/GYN Message from the Director

Message from the Director

Dear Applicant,

We are delighted that you have taken an interest in the Prisma Health/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia OB/GYN Residency Program. I’m excited to share with you briefly what makes us so great.

Our program has continued to have tremendous growth over the past several years. Our department faculty boasts expertise in the fields of: ultrasonography, maternal-fetal medicine, genetics, benign gynecologic surgery, reproductive endocrinology, family planning, urogynecology, gynecologic oncology, colposcopy, vulvar disorders and pediatric/adolescent gynecology. We believe in training well rounded resident physicians who want to give back to their community. We have a diverse patient population and have specialized curriculums in family planning, pediatric/adolescent gynecology, ultrasound, minimally invasive surgery, and advocacy. We are proud that we are a Ryan Residency Program, and train residents to practice contraceptive equity and reproductive justice.

Our residents enjoy a comprehensive didactic program which includes twice weekly multidisciplinary conference and core lectures. This includes (but not limited to): Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Morbidity and Mortality Conference, as well as Colposcopy and Fetal Monitoring conferences. We have developed a dedicated simulation curriculum in both obstetrics and gynecology, with access to a state-of-the-art medical simulation center staffed by experts in the field. We believe in resilience and resident wellness – we have a yearly teambuilding retreat, participate in ACOG Wellness Week, have at least one Grand Rounds per year dedicated to physician wellness, and a resident wellness champion who leads dedicated wellness sessions.

Our residents enjoy a great quality of life in Columbia. We have great restaurants, parks and access to outdoor activities (boating, river rafting, hiking, national forests), museums, breweries, college sports and world-class entertainment venues. We boast excellent year-round weather, and the beach and/or mountains are less than two hours away. This is just the tip of the iceberg!

I hope that you will take the opportunity to read through our program information carefully and I would encourage you to send us your application.

I look forward to meeting you,

Matthew J Lenhard, MD, FACOG
Clinical Assistant Professor
