Message from the Program Director

Welcome to the Prisma Health–Midlands/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Pediatric Residency Program webpage. Thank you for your interest in our program here in Columbia, South Carolina. I am happy to be stepping into the role of program director this year and hoping to build on the years of academic, clinical and personal successes of our current and past graduates. The program here at Prisma Health–Midlands will always hold a special place in my heart and my hope is that it inspires the same passion in all our graduates as they look back on their time with us.

My story with our Pediatric Residency Program begins back in 2006 as a fourth-year medical student. Having grown up and studied in Ohio my entire life, when it came to my residency training I was ready for a change. I was fortunate enough to be able to spend a month at (then) Palmetto Health in the outpatient clinic as a visiting acting intern. My expectations were honestly pretty low having never been to Columbia before. What came after was an experience like I could have never imagined. I quickly came to realize the dedication not only to teaching and education but to how residents and medical students were welcomed into the “family” of Palmetto Health and UofSC. The relationships I formed in that short month stuck with me not only through the remainder of my fourth year but as it turns out, through the rest of my life. When it came time to submit my rank list there was no doubt where I wanted to be.

What followed was a whirlwind of three years of laughter, joy and occasional tears, but mostly unforgettable memories of residency trainingin Columbia. That was followed by the opportunity to stay on as a fourth year chief resident and thereafter as a faculty member. Eventually, my wife, children and I returned to Ohio briefly to create and run the Pediatric Hospital Medicine Fellowship at Nationwide Children’s Hospital. But something always seemed to be missing and it was the family I had found here with Prisma Health and UofSC through faculty, staff, students and residents, new and old.

Our program is going through some exciting changes when it comes to innovative curricular ideas/plans, advocacy and outreach programs, as well as a renewed dedication to resident quality improvement and research and to resident wellness. Through our changes two things remain the heart of our program: a dedication to education focused on creating outstanding pediatricians; and the sense of becoming a part of our family both during training and afterwards. Our program strives to continue the tradition of excellence and togetherness exemplified by its many years of success, both regionally and nationally.

We look forward to hearing from interested applicants who want to learn more about the amazing things we are doing here at Prisma Health–Midlands/University of South Carolina School of Medicine Pediatric Residency Program and are excited for what the future holds.

Best Wishes,
Scott Carney, MD, FAAP
