Biography
Dr. Harold Friedman founded the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1984 and has served as chief of the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery since then. He has been a member of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine faculty since 1984, becoming a Professor of Surgery in 1990.​
 
 A graduate of Hobart College, Geneva, New York, Dr. Friedman earned a Ph.D. in anatomy from the University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia, and a doctor of medicine from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, Charlottesville, Va. He completed a general surgery residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, Tucson, Arizona, and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center, Charlottesville, Virginia.​
 
 Dr. Friedman is involved in research on implantable materials and soft tissue interactions and has published extensively in the plastic surgery literature. He has served as President of the South Carolina Plastic Surgery Society and President of the Southeastern Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. He is a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, the Columbia Medical Society, and serves as an Associate Editor of the Annals of Plastic Surgery.
Lee Smith Carson, MD, PhD Northeast Dermatology
Dr. Lee Carson completed her college education at Clemson University in 1981, earning a bachelor of science degree in Zoology. Dr. Carson completed her PhD at The University of South Carolina, in education administration. She graduated from University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 1998 with a MD. Next she completed an Internal Medicine Internship at the University of South Carolina. She went on to finish a Dermatology Residency at Wright University in Dayton, OH.

Dr. Carson is the owner and operator of Northeast Dermatology, PA, in Columbia, SC, specializing in medical and cosmetic dermatology. 
Elliot H. Chen, MD Associate Professor of Surgery, University Plastic Surgery
Dr. Elliott Chen joined the faculty of the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2008. Prior to his appointment with the Department of Surgery, he was employed as a general plastic surgeon with Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center and as an assistant professor in the Department of Surgery with University Hospitals Case Medical Center, Cleveland, Ohio.​
 
A graduate of Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, Dr. Chen earned a doctor of medicine from Temple University School of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served a general surgery residency at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Stony Brook, New York, and a plastic surgery residency at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, Nashville, Tennessee. A craniofacial fellowship was completed at the University Of Pennsylvania School Of Medicine, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Jarom N. Gilstrap, MD Assistant Professor of Surgery
Dr. Gilstrap completed his undergraduate education at the University of Utah, Salt Lake City, Utah.  He earned a doctor of medicine from the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee, Wisconsin with recognition from the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society as well as numerous awards, including the Michael J. Dunn, M.D., Class of 1962 Achievement Award, the Lowell A. Sether Memorial Award in Anatomy, The Department of Surgery Achievement Award and honors from the The American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
 
He went on to complete a combined residency in General Surgery and Plastic Surgery at Lehigh Valley, Allentown, Pennsylvania.  He continued to show a passion for medicine and was honored with Lehigh County Medical Society Humaneness in Medicine Award in 2015.
 
Dr. Gilstrap completed his training in microsurgery as a clinical instructor at Stanford University Hospital, Palo Alto, California.  While there he performed hundreds of complex cases involving microsurgical reconstruction.

Jarom Gilstrap is the eldest son in a family of five.  He is the proud father of four children and enjoys going hiking and camping with his wife and kids.
 
Peter C. Haines, MD Plastic Surgery, Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group

Peter Haines, MD, FACS, is a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been caring for patients in the Columbia community since 1986.

Dr. Haines earned his medical degree from the University of Vermont School of Medicine where he completed his internship and residency in general surgery. Subsequently, he completed his Plastic Surgery residency at the University of Virginia. In addition, Dr. Haines completed several advanced Plastic Surgical Fellowships at the University of Virginia including hand surgery, craniofacial and burn reconstruction. He holds advanced aesthetic certifications in multiple laser, thermal, and ultrasonic technologies.

Dr. Haines is on the Board of the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons, and former board member of the Columbia Medical Society and South Carolina Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Cleft (lip and) Palate Association, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

Dr. Haines interests are many and varied, but he particularly enjoys being on the water.  Dr. Haines serves as an official for US Rowing.

Catharine Halkyard, PA-C Physician Assistant, Palmetto Health Department of Plastic Surgery

Catharine Halkyard, PA-C has been with the Department of Plastic Surgery since September of 2016. A graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina, she obtained her master's degree in physician assistant studies in August, 2014. She obtained her undergraduate degree in health sciences with a concentration in public health from Clemson University. She is board certified in the state of South Carolina, and by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. Catharine is thrilled to be serving patients in her hometown of Columbia, SC. She is married to Rick and enjoys exercising, traveling, and working on her ever-growing list of projects.

Thomas C. McFadden Jr., MD, MBA, FACS Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon; Medical Director, Advanced Cosmetic Surgery
Dr. Thomas McFadden is a leading board certified plastic surgeon with the highest level of experience in the areas of cosmetic facial surgery, breast surgery and body sculpture. Having been the FIRST fellowship-trained cosmetic surgeon in the upstate under three of the world's leading cosmetic surgeons, Dr. McFadden’s techniques are the most modern and innovative available. He has authored numerous publications in the field of plastic and reconstructive surgery and has been an invited guest speaker to speak on his techniques on numerous occasions.
Mirsad Mujadzic, MD Associate Professor of Surgery,University Plastic Surgery
Dr. Mirsad Mujadzic completed a two-year hand and microsurgery fellowship at Christine Kleinert Institute in Louisville, Kentucky. He also completed a fellowship in upper extremity surgery and microsurgery in Innsbruck, Austria, and breast reconstruction with perforator flaps in Munich, Germany. At the Wellington Hospital in London, he completed a short fellowship in aesthetics in surgery and facial rejuvenation, followed by a research fellowship in neurophysiology at the University of Louisville. Dr. Mujadzic completed his plastic surgery residency training at Augusta University, and general surgery training at the Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, NY.
 
He is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in hand surgery.
Fred Mullins, MD, FACS President & Medical Director, JMSBC, Inc.
Dr. Fred Mullins, an Augusta native with family members in the medical field, has had an interest in the Joseph M. Still Burn Center from an early age. He graduated from Augusta College and went on to attend the Medical College of Georgia, earning a Bachelor of Science in the Physician Assistant Program. He worked with the burn center as a physician assistant for one year, during which he was mentored and encouraged to go on to medical school by Dr. Joseph Still, the founder of the burn center and owner of a private practice of physicians working in the burn center. 
 
Dr. Mullins went back to the Medical College of Georgia and obtained his medical degree in 1996. He did his internship and completed his General Surgery residency at Spartanburg Regional Healthcare System in 2001, and returned to the private practice of Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc., as a burn surgeon.
 
Dr. Mullins became the Medical Director of the Joseph M. Still Burn Center in July, 2004 when Dr. Still retired from active practice. Dr. Mullins also serves as president of Joseph M. Still Burn Centers, Inc., which has five clinics in the Southeast: the original in Augusta, a full-service burn unit in Brandon, Ms., and outpatient clinics in Austell, Ga., Valdosta, Ga., and Charleston, S.C.
Rakesh M. Patel, MD Palmetto Health-USC Ophthalmology, Attending Physician
Rakesh M Patel, MD, is an oculofacial and plastic reconstructive surgeon with Palmetto Health-USC Ophthalmology. He went to Duke University for his undergraduate schooling and to Medical University of South Carolina for medical school. He then completed an ophthalmology residency at Montefiore Medical Center of Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, New York. This was followed by a two year fellowship in oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery approved by the American Society of Ophthlamic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (ASOPRS). Dr. Patel’s interests include cosmetic and reconstructive procedures of the eyelid, tear duct, and orbit. This includes thyroid eye disease, ptosis, eyelid reconstruction, Botox, facial fillers, and blepharoplasty of the upper and lower eyelids. Dr. Patel has coauthored several journal articles and book chapters in the field of oculoplastics.
 
Long Quan, MD, PhD Carolinas Dermatology Group, P.A.; Attending Physician
Dr. Long Quan completed his college education at Indiana University in 1989, earning a bachelor of science degree with highest distinction in biology. He graduated from Duke University School of Medicine in 1996 with an MD and a PhD degree. Next he completed an Internal Medicine Internship at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. 

After internship, Dr. Quan relocated to Houston, Texas where he began his residency in dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine. Once he completed residency, he pursued a fellowship specializing in MOHS micrographic surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern in Dallas, Texas.

He joined Carolinas Dermatology group in 2001 and specializes in Mohs micrographic surgery. Through the years, he has done over 18,000 Mohs procedures and greatly enjoys the reconstructive aspect of surgery.
Dr. Quan greatly enjoys what he does and feels that he has never “worked” a day in his life. His hobbies and interests consist of fishing, playing the guitar, and spending time with his family.
Smythe Rich, MD Plastic Surgery, Attending Physician
Dr. Smythe Rich, a Columbia, SC native, graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina. Upon completing ten years of post-graduate training, he returned to Columbia with double board certification in both head and neck surgery and facial plastic and reconstructive surgery.
 
Dr. Rich has lectured throughout the United States on topics pertaining to Facial Plastic Surgery. He participates in medical mission trips as well as actively supporting the Boy Scouts Board of the Indian Water Council. Currently, he is the director of the Center of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
 
He enjoys training other physicians in the areas of fillers, Botox, and cosmetic surgery as well as coaching soccer and spending time with his wife and two children.
John Walsh IV, MD Professor and Chair of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery, University Specialty Clinic
John J. Walsh IV, MD, joined the University of South Carolina School of Medicine faculty in 1999 after completing a hand surgery fellowship at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Dr. Walsh received his bachelor's degree in biology at the University of Delaware in Newark. He received his medical degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and completed an orthopedic surgery residency and a transitional internship at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center at Fort Gordon, Georgia. He is board certified in orthopedic surgery with a certificate of added qualification in surgery of the hand. Dr. Walsh is a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand and the Christian Medical Society. His primary interests are hand and upper extremity surgery and reconstructive osteotomies for bone deformity. He is also interested in reconstruction for brachial plexus injuries.
