Program Overview

Message from the Department Chair
Welcome to the Prisma Health–Midlands and University of South Carolina School of Medicine Columbia Internal Medicine program. I am humbled and honored to serve as the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine.

We are proud of our training programs and our residents, fellows and students. You consistently challenge us and allow us to provide better care for the patients we serve every day. Together with our partners at Prisma Health Richland, the Dorn VA Medical Center and affiliated clinics, we provide a wide range of medical training programs.

I am very excited that we are now offering a Primary Care Internal Medicine residency program. In an integrated health care system, strong primary care providers are an essential component. The Palmetto Health-USC Medical Group continues to evolve to meet the health care needs of our community benefits from very strong primary care internal medicine practices including the Internal Medicine Center which serves as our residency program’s clinic.  Our primary care practices are at the forefront of primary care delivery, offering interdisciplinary team based care, Level 3 Patient Centered Medical Home certification, and on-site collaborative mental health care as just a few examples of our clinic’s strengths.

Our general internal medicine faculty are one of the strengths of our residency program, serving as leaders in all of our educational efforts. They, along with our other faculty who are recognized for innovative education and excellent teaching, will serve as superb role models for our residents. The work they have done to prepare our ambulatory training sites for this program makes me very proud.

We have been training excellent Internists in our program who have gone on to work as primary care providers, hospitalists, and in the internal medicine specialties for many years. It is exciting to now be able to offer residents who seek a career in primary care a training path that will prepare them to become superb primary care physicians and leaders.

Message from the Program Director
Thank you for your interest in our Primary Care Internal Medicine residency program. I think you will find that we have a lot to offer. While this program is new, we have been working very hard for many years to continually improve the ambulatory training our residents receive. These efforts have laid the foundation of what I believe will be a wonderful primary care training experience.

The Internal Medicine Center, our primary teaching clinic received the highest level of certification as a Patient Centered Medical Home, and will serve as an excellent training site. Our program will not only provide strong clinical training. We have designed the primary care program curriculum to also offer diverse experiences in a variety of primary care settings including private practices and rural health clinics.

Our goal is to not only train excellent primary care physicians, but to train future leaders in primary care and in health care delivery in general. To that end you will be exposed to training in population health, quality improvement, multidisciplinary and team based care models, collaborative care models between primary care and mental health providers, and the importance of community based interventions in improving patient health outcomes.

The culture of our categorical program has been one of collegiality, commitment to excellence, and teamwork. It is my hope that this will also define the primary care program. We offer candidates the training they are seeking in a great environment, and I hope that you will consider this opportunity. I believe that we can get you started along the career path you are seeking.
