Family Medicine—Tuomey (Sumter)

Program Overview

Family Medicine at Palmetto Health Tuomey
The Palmetto Health Tuomey Family Medicine Residency strives to create a learning environment for developing future specialists in Family Medicine. The program intends its graduates to continue to serve the Sumter area, its surrounding rural communities, and other South Carolina communities. We want our residents to learn to be skilled family physicians possessing compassion, character, and balance.

Family Medicine Residency Program Mission
Create an educational environment where residents grow into highly skilled, compassionate clinicians. Through caring for our most vulnerable and underserved communities, we provide a learning environment focusing on the well-being of our faculty, residents, care team members, patients and families with a humanistic approach supporting professional development.

Our faculty offer a one-on-one training opportunity for an optimal learning environment, they include:
  • Nine family physicians
  • Sports medicine, geriatric, and maternity care specialists
  • Preventive medicine faculty
  • Behavioral medicine
  • A clinical pharmacologist
  • Computer information systems specialist
We emphasize full-breadth Family Medicine. Our diverse patient population offers broad exposure to all age groups. Our strongest areas include adult medicine, child and adolescent health, musculoskeletal medicine and office procedures. We also maintain our own maternity care service and a busy inpatient service. In addition to the required curriculum in any Family Medicine training program, our residents also have the opportunity to learn to perform office and emergency ultrasound, achieve certification in the Fundamentals of Critical Care Support and learn the core competencies needed to provide a patient-centered medical home.
