Visiting Medical Students

HomeWhy Choose Palmetto Health Visiting Medical Students

Providing the highest quality care with compassion and dignity to all patients.

At Palmetto Health, in partnership with the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, we regard medical education, graduate medical education, graduate dental education and research as an integral part of our commitment to provide patient care to all in need. We welcome eligible senior visiting students as space permits.

As a visiting medical student at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, you will have an opportunity to be a part of the care team. You will attend teaching rounds and conferences, see patients with common and rare diseases, and participate in educational activities while meeting and interacting with program directors and faculty.

The USC SOM Visiting Student Elective Program accepts senior medical students from schools accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). They have elective opportunities available for visiting students at its affiliate hospital, Palmetto Health Richland. Visiting students shall be limited to a maximum of 12 weeks (three four-week rotations). Electives will be assigned to visiting students only after all USC SOM students have been scheduled. The USC SOM will begin accepting applications for its 2015-16 academic year Monday, June 1, 2015.

Eligibility

Visiting students must be candidates for the MD or DO degree in good academic standing in an accredited school or from institutions with which the school has a formal exchange. USC SOM does not accept any third-year medical students or core rotations. Visiting students also must:

  • Have liability insurance
  • Have health insurance
  • Have and submit a complete immunization record
  • Have passed a criminal background check

How to Apply

Visiting students interested in taking a fourth-year elective at USC SOM must apply through the Visiting Student Application Service. VSAS is a web-based Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) application designed to simplify the process for taking senior "away" electives at US medical institutions. VSAS requires students to submit just one application for all institutions, effectively reducing paperwork, miscommunication, and time for all users.

Palmetto Health emphasizes that completing the initial VSAS application is only the first step of the process and does not guarantee approval/acceptance for the rotation month until ALL requested items have been submitted. Completing these steps will fast-track the final decision for rotation approval. Upon rotation approval, you will be required to complete Palmetto Health Clinical Rotation Orientation.

For specific information about applying to USC SOM through VSAS, please visit https://services.aamc.org/20/vsas/public/school/instID/820/mode/main/from/public_schools.

Questions? Contact VSAS at vsas@aamc.org or 202-428-9898.

Computer-EPICenter Information on System / PH IT Access
The Department of Clinical Quality Informatics plays an important role in improving the quality of patient care and safety by standardizing best practices, reducing unnecessary variation, and reducing medication errors. Through the development and advancement of evidence-based order sets toward implementation of Computerized Provider Order Entry (CPOE) and work with performance improvement initiatives, the goal is to close the loop between requirements, recommendations and care provided. The CQI Department assists Palmetto Health’s providers with educational support on various clinical applications including some of the following:

  • CPOE (computerized provider order entry)
  • EPIcenter (electronic medical record)
  • EPImobile (patient information for handheld devices)
  • Radiology and cardiology image retrieval
  • VPN and remote access

Palmetto Health IT Access
Once rotation is approved and your IT multiuser and HIPAA forms are completed and returned—you will receive your login and password by email from the Office of Admissions and Enrollment, unless it's an Emergency Medicine or EMS Ultrasound rotation. Program Coordinator Sherry Allen will issue your login and password for those two areas.
